His brain, her brain / Female and male brains differences

Anyone who's heard a group of men discuss the virtues of high-end stereo equipment will have little trouble believing that men's and women's brains work differently. That's also no surprise to scientists, who have spent the past two decades trying to figure out which aspects of cognition and behavior are determined by nature and which by nurture. The verdict: Female and male brains differ in both structure and function, and many of those variations start in the womb. It's no longer: "Is there a difference?" It's: "What do these differences mean?"

Lesbianism in the Chinese of Hong Kong

...
Chinese  chronicles  and  historical  sources  reveal  two  areas  in  which lesbianism  was  common:  the  harem  and  certain  provinces  in  Canton.  In ancient  China  keeping  concubines  was  a  privilege  of  the  emperors  or  the wealthy.  A  man's  wealth  was  measured  by  the  number  of  concubines  he
kept.  "A  duke  can  take  nine  concubines  at  one time,  an  emperor  can  take twelve concubines at one time," is a passage found in the Kung-yang Tsuen. The  Li-Chi (The Book of Rites) states  that  until  the  age  of  50  a  husband should  enter  the  pleasure pavilion  of  his  wife  once  every third  day,  of  his concubines  every fifth  day.  But  the  number  of  concubines  made  this prescription  a physical impossibility.  The  lack  of sexual  outlet,  the  social isolation,  and  the  close  proximity  of  women  made  the  harem  a  fertile ground  for the  development of lesbian relationships.  Van  Gulik (1961)  and Humana  and  Wang  (1971)  have  described  such  practices  in detail. In addition to pudendal  contact,  clitoral stimulation,  and  cunnilingus,  the use of  artificial  penises  was  also  favored.  The  existence  of  various  artificial penises  made  of  polished  ivory  or lacquered  wood  serves  to  illustrate  the degree  of  sophistication  of  lesbian  practice  in  China.  In  a  Ming  period painting,  such  a  dildo  is illustrated in  a  lesbian  love scene. A  double-~nded dildo with two loops of silk cord in  the middle was  also  used to  enable both partners to obtain simultaneous  pleasure. Lesbian practice was also encouraged by the husband in order to  help him  conserve  his  sexual  energy.  The legendary Yellow  Emperor,  in  his chapter called Hsiian-nui-Ching, described the following posture:
Lady Precious Yin and Mistress White Jade lay on top. of each other, their legs entwined so that their jade gates (genitalias) pressed together. They then moved in a rubbing and jerking fashion against each other like fishes gabbing flies or water plants from the surface. As they became more excited,  the  "mouths" widen and Lesbianism  in the Chinese of Hong Kong  23 choosing his position carefully, Great Lord Yang thrusts between them with his jade root (penis). They moved in unison until all three shared the ultimate simultaneously. The triple flow of essence will strengthen bones and sinews as well as the breathing. It  will  also assist  the  Great  Lord  Yang  to  avoid  the  Five  Overstrainings  and  the Seven Sex-injuries.
In the harem, women turned to lesbianism because of social isolation.  In the provinces of Canton,  on the other hand,  women who were free and economically  independent  formed  lesbian  relationships.  Chen  (1928) described  the  practice  of  lesbianism  among  women  employed in  the  silk industry  in  three  provinces:  Shun-te,  P'an-Yii,  and  Hsi-Ch'iao. The Gazetteer  of  Chinese  Customs  (1935) documented  the  formation  of  the Golden  Orchid  Association  in these  provinces.  The members  of  this association  were exclusively  females.  Whenever  two  members  of  the association  developed  deep  feelings  for  each  other,  certain  rites  of "marriage" were  performed.  For such a  "marriage" to  be  permitted,  one partner was designated the "husband." The first step consisted of offering to the intended partner  a  gift of peanut  candies,  honey,  and  other sweets. Once this was accepted, a night-long celebration attended by mutual female friends followed. From then on the couple would live  as  "man and wife." Sexual practices like genital contact called "grinding bean curd" or the use of dildos were described. The couple could also adopt female children and these children could inherit the property of their "parents".

the female counterpart to Freud’s concept of castration anxiety

Penis Envy:

Penis envy is the female counterpart to Freud’s concept of castration anxiety. In his theory of psychosexual development, Freud suggested that during the phallic stage (around ages 3-5) young girls distance themselves from their mothers and instead devote their affections to their fathers.
According to Freud, this occurs when a girl realizes that she has no penis. "Girls hold their mother responsible for their lack of a penis and do not forgive her for their being thus put at a disadvantage," Freud suggested (1933).

THE SOCIOLOGY OF PROSTITUTION

We  cannot,  however,  define human  prostitution  simply  as  the  use  of  sexual responses for an ulterior purpose. This  would  include a great portion  of  all  social  behavior,  especially  that  of  women.  It  would  include  marriage, for  example,  wherein  women  trade  their  sexual  favors  for  an  economic and social status supplied by men.9 It would include the employment  of  pretty  girls  in  stores,  cafes,  charity  drives,  advertisements.  It  would include all the feminine arts that  women use in pursuing ends that  require men  as  intermediaries,  arts  that  permeate  daily  life,  and,  while  not generally involving actual intercourse, contain and utilize erotic stimulation.

But looking at the subject in this way  reveals one thing. The  basic element  in  what  we  actually  call  prostitution the  employment  of  sex  for  non-sexual ends within  a competitive-authoritative  system-characterizes  not simply prostitution  itself  but  all of our institutions  in which sex is involved,  notably  courtship  and wedlock.  Prostitution  therefore resembles,  from one  point  of  view,  behavior  found in  our most  respectable  institutions. It  is one  end  of  a long sequence or gradation of  essentially  similar  phenomena that  stretches  at  the  other  end  to such  approved patterns  as  engagement and marriage. What, then, is the difference between  prostitution and these other institutions  involving sex?
The  difference  rests  at  bottom  upon  the  functional  relation  between  society  and sexual institutions.  It  is through these institutions  that  erotic  gratification is made dependent on, and subservient to, certain co-operative  performances inherently  necessary  to  societal  continuity.  The  sexual  institutions  are distinguished by the fact that  though they  all provide gratification, they  do not  all tie it to the same social functions. (…) This  explains  why they  are differently evaluated  in the  eyes  of the mores.

The  institutional  control of sex follows three  correlative lines.  First,  it  permits,  encourages, or  forces various  degrees of sexual  intimacy  within  specific  customary  relations,  such  as  courtship,  concubinage,  and  marriage.  Second, to  bolster this  positive  control,  it  discourages sexual  intimacy in all other situations,  e.g., when the persons are not potential mates  or when they are already mated to other persons." Finally, in what is really  a  peculiar  category  of  the  negative  rules,  it  absolutely  prohibits  sexual  relations  in  certain specified situations.  This  last  form  of  control  refers  almost exclusively to incest taboos,  which  reinforce the first-named (positive)  control by banishing the disruptive forces of sexual competition from  the  family  group.

These  lines  of  control  are present  no  matter  what  the  specific kind  of  institutional system. There may be monogram,  polygyny,  or concubinage;  wife exchange or religious prostitution;  premarital chastity  or unchastity.  The important point is not the particular kind of concrete institution,  but  the  fact that  without  the  positive  and negative  norms there  could be no  institutions  at  all.  Since social  functions  can  be  performed only  through  institutional patterns, the  controls are indispensable to the  continuance of  a  given  social system.

Rock Music in China

“Fuelled by the new sounds that entered China's illegal doorways, and driven by a desire to move beyond the stereotypical hard rock idiom, new bands started to experiment with different sounds. Today, sounds ranging from hardcore punk to deep house can be heard from Urumqi to Beijing. Let's get dakou'ed!

By the end of the twentieth century a new generation emerged in urban China, named after the cut CDs available at illegal markets in Chinese cities. The cut on the margin of these ‘dakou’ CDs, as they are called in Chinese, has brought this young generation to the centre of global music culture. One of its followers writes on a website: ‘When Americans fiercely give themselves a cut, they also give the world a possibility of communism and unity. Our government doesn’t encourage 1.3 billion people to listen to rock and roll. “Dakou” products usher a million Chinese youth into a new wave, a new listening sensibility, a new awareness, a new mind and a new set of values.’ ‘Dakou’ stands for far more than just CDs that infringe copyright legislation; it stands for a lifestyle very much in vogue among China’s urban youth.”

Marquis de Sade' s Justine

They were given twenty-four hours to leave the convent; into their hands, together with their five score crowns, was thrown the responsibility to provide for themselves as they saw fit. Delighted to be her own mistress, Juliette spent a minute, perhaps two, wiping away Justine's tears, then, observing it was in vain, she fell to scolding instead of comforting her;she rebuked Justine for her sensitiveness; she told her, with a philosophic acuity far beyond her years, that in this world one must not be afflicted save by what affects one personally; that it was possible to find in oneself physical sensations of a sufficiently voluptuous piquancy to extinguish all the moral affections whose shock could be painful; that it was all the more essential so to proceed, since true wisdom consists infinitely more in doubling the sum of one's pleasures than in increasing the sum of one's pains; that, in a word, there was nothing one ought not do in order to deaden in oneself that perfidious sensibility from which none but others profit while to us it brings naught but troubles. But it is difficult to harden a gentle good heart, it resists the arguments of a toughened bad mind, and its solemn satisfactions console it for the loss of the bel-esprit's false splendors.

Juliette, employing other resources, then said to her sister, that with the age and the figure they both of them had, they could not die of hunger .She cited the example of one of their neighbors' daughters who, having escaped from her father's house, was presently very royally maintained and far happier, doubtless, than if she had remained at home with her family; one must, said Juliette, take good care to avoid believing it is marriage that renders a girl happy;that, a captive under the hymeneal laws, she has, with much ill-humor to suffer, a very slight measure of joys to expect; instead of which, were she to surrender herself to libertinage, she might always be able to protect herself against her lovers' moods, or be comforted by their number.

Thailand today

News from Thailand

Yingluck Shinawatra
"Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra exchanged views on economic and financial issues with other leaders of Asia and Europe at the ninth Asia-Europe Meeting, or ASEM 9.
The meeting, held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on 5-6 November 2012, Prime Minister Yingluck cited a “New Silk Route” as an example of connectivity between Asia and Europe, in addition to the existing maritime and air transport. She urged the two regions to support land transport networks between them, as well.
The Prime Minister said that another long-term project is a high-speed train system linking Thailand with China and connecting further with Russia and Europe through the Trans-Siberian Railway. The complementary networks would be an option for goods transportation from Southeast Asia to Europe. This connectivity, supported by similar regulations on cross-border transport, would promote better flows for trade and investment."

$$$ Ke$ha - We R Who We R $$$

Ke$ha - We R Who We R

Jack London

This man had saved his life, which was something; but, further, he was the ideal master. Other men saw to the welfare of their dogs from a sense of duty and business expediency; he saw to the welfare of his as if  they were his own  children, because he could not help it. And he saw  further. He never forgot a kindly greeting or a cheering word, and to sit  down for  a  long  talk  with  them  (“gas”  he called  it)  was  as  much his  delight as theirs. He had a way of taking Buck’s head roughly between  his hands, and resting his own head upon Buck’s, of shaking him back  and forth, the while calling him ill names that to Buck were love names. Buck  knew  no  greater  joy  than  that  rough  embrace and  the sound of  murmured oaths, and at each jerk back and forth it seemed that his heart  would be shaken out  of his  body, so great was its  ecstasy. And when,  released, he sprang to his feet, his mouth laughing, his eyes eloquent, his  throat  vibrant  with unuttered  sound,  and  in  that  fashion  remained  without movement, John Thornton would reverently exclaim, “God! you  can all but speak!”

Expressing her tenderness that way...

(Excerpt from Sexus by Henry Miller)

I would ask her to prepare the bath for me. She would pretend to demur but she would do it just the same. One day, while I was seated in the tub soaping myself, I noticed that she had forgotten the towels. «Ida,» I called, «bring me some towels!» She walked into the bathroom and handed me them. She had on a silk bathrobe and a pair of silk hose. As she stooped over the tub to put the towels on the rack her bathrobe slid open. I slid to my knees and buried my head in her muff. It happened so quickly that she didn't have time to rebel, or even top ret end to rebel. In a moment I had her in the tub, stockings and all. I slipped the bathrobe off and threw it on the floor. I left the stockings on—it made her more lascivious looking, more the Cranach type. I lay back and pulled her on top of me. She was just like a bitch in heat, biting me all over, panting, gasping, wriggling like a worm on the hook. As we were drying ourselves she bent over and began nibbling at my prick. I sat on the edge of the tub and she kneeled at my feet gobbling it. After a while I made her stand up, bend over; then I let her have it from the rear. She had a small juicy cunt which fitted me like a glove. I bit the nape of her neck, the lobes of her ears, the sensitive spot on her shoulder, and as I pulled away I left the mark of my teeth on her beautiful white ass. Not a word spoken. When we had finished she went to her room and began dressing. I heard her humming softly to herself. I was quite amazed that she was capable of expressing her tenderness that way

The plane arriving, at last.

Romney vs. Obama

a passage by eugene robinson

We know Romney envisions a future in which the U.S. economy returns to full employment, but we have no real idea how all the tax-cutting he proposes is supposed to get us there. We know he promises 12 million new jobs—but we also know that many economists believe the U.S. economy could add that many jobs in the next four years with no policy changes, assuming the recovery gains a little steam.

We know what Obama has done in office—averting a depression, saving the auto industry, passing health care reform, ending the war in Iraq, killing Osama bin Laden. But we still don’t have a vivid picture of how Obama sees the next four years. He spells out his policies, but he doesn’t tell us where they lead

On the road

Here the big trucks roared, wham, and inside two minutes one of them cranked to a stop for me. I ran for it with my soul whoopeeing. And what a driver-a great big tough truckdriver with popping eyes and a hoarse raspy voice who just slammed and kicked at everything and got his rig under way and paid hardly any attention to me. So I could rest my tired soul a little, for one of the biggest troubles hitchhiking is having to talk to innumerable people, make them feel that they didn't make a mistake picking you up, even entertain them almost, all of which is a great strain when you're going all the way and don't plan to sleep in hotels. The guy just yelled above the roar, and all I had to do was yell back, and we relaxed. And he balled that thing clear to Iowa City and yelled me the funniest stories about how he got around the law in every town that had an unfair speed limit, saying over and over again, "Them goddam cops can't put no flies on my ass!" Just as we rolled into Iowa Qty he saw another truck coming behind us, and because he had to turn off at Iowa City he blinked his tail lights at the other guy and slowed down for me to jump out, which I did with my bag, and the other truck, acknowledging this exchange, stopped for me, and once again, in the twink of nothing, I was in another big high cab, all set to go hundreds of miles across the night, and was I happy! And the new truck driver was as crazy as the other and yelled just as much, and all I had to do was lean back and roll on. Now I could see Denver looming ahead of me like the Promised Land, way out there beneath the stars, across the prairie of Iowa and the plains of Nebraska, and I could see the greater vision of San Francisco beyond, like jewels in the night. He balled the jack and told stories for a couple of hours, then, at a town in Iowa where years later Dean and I were stopped on suspicion in what looked like a stolen Cadillac, he slept a few hours in the seat. I slept too, and took one little walk along the lonely brick walls illuminated by one lamp, with the prairie brooding at the end of each little street and the smell of the corn like dew in the night.

From Jack Kerouac in On the Road
